Box’s modular design for new leisure centre heads to planning

Havering Council have put forward a planning application for a new Box-designed leisure centre in Rainham.

The moves comes after local residents were asked for their views on two proposed sites for the centre, which will include a six-lane swimming pool, 72-station fitness suite and dance studio.

Significantly, Box Architects’ modular approach meant that a single design could be easily modified for each site, and constructed quickly and cost-effectively.

“I am happy to say we have submitted plans for the new Rainham Sports Centre, bringing us one step closer to providing modern facilities for residents in the south of the borough,” said Havering Council leader Damian White.

“We’ve taken on board residents’ views and chosen a site that is ideally located, quick to progress and within close proximity to other shops and facilities. If approved, we can move ahead with another new leisure centre to fulfil our commitment to give everybody in Havering the opportunity to get active and live happy, healthy lives.”

When developing proposals to replace the outdated and unsafe Chafford Sports Complex, council officers looked at Becontree Heath Leisure Centre in Dagenham, where Box Architects worked with Total Swimming to deliver a 50m pool using a modular above-deck construction method.

The Rainham project will be the latest collaboration between Box and Total Swimming, following the successful completion of projects in Andover, Dagenham, Warrington and Ollerton.
